no practice

I forgot to mention that there will be no practice tonight. Don't forget creve cour sat. and sun. tho.
I am planning to put up a gallery of pictures from our group soon. At least at first, it will probably be on flickr, and I will put the adress up as soon as I get it. If anyone has uploadable pictures they would like to share, just email them to me.
I invite everyone to check out the post I just put up on my other blog, Daryl's Den (the link is in the list to the right).
You might find it interesting.

prison and creve coure

Sorry the posts have been scarce lately, I've been very busy, I'll try to get more up.
We did fine at the womens prison saturday, even thought there were only a few of us. We sang a lot of round dance songs, which is what they like. I think they are going to try to schedule our next visit around a feast.
Don't forget we are going to be singing at creve coure rendevous this saturday and sunday, from noon to four.
Also, Jerry and a few people are going to Kickapoo school friday, I'm not sure what time. Unfortunately, I have to work.
I found a neat powwow site, POWWOW POWER
I think I will put it up on the link list.
I'll try to get some more stuff soon, plus something on my personal blog you might find interesting.

FRIGID POWWOW

The mothers day powwow turned out to be cold and wet all weekend. What a shame! Still, there were some good things. Rosa was head lady dancer, and she did a fantastic job, especially considering the weather. Brenda's class on native music went well, she had 14 people there. I got some gourd dancing in, and heard a good expanation of some of the symbolism behind it. When I get time, I'll put some of it up. I didn't make it back sunday (it rained all day here), but heard they had a decent turnout considering.
Last night a few of us went to Knox county nursing home to perform. We had a good time, and they always enjoy it. It was especially great to get so many people in wheelchairs out for the round dances.
Don't forget, we are going to the women's prison saturday, be there by 11:30, 12:00 at the latest.
Ellen finally left for her trip out west sunday (at least she was supposed to), we all worry about her and hope the trip was okay. We will probably be having practices at Jerry's house for a while, but Ellen invited us to use her backyard, and she has such a great place, we might. We will let everyone know.
Finally, don't forget the Creve Cour rendesvous saturday and sunday of memorial day weekend. We need as many people as possible.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Not much going on, but a lot coming up. Don't forget practice friday, be there early to help with the prison drum. Also there is the powwow this weekend at seven circles, the first of the year around here. I am really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, the weather channel is calling for rain right now. We'll see. Keep your fingers crossed.

Thinking of all the things we do, the prison, nursing homes, youth groups, etc., it occurs to me that this is all community service of one kind or another. And this is what a group like ours should be doing. Native groups have a deep sense of community, which often seems lost in the modern world. All the old societies, men's and women's, were as much about service as about honor. Look at the trouble the national powwow people got into with the Ponca helushka when they wanted to hold a formal war dance without any service as part of it. Going to powwows and working on regalia is great, everyone knows I love it, but I think people who only do things like that are missing something really important.

A LOT COMING UP

This is going to be a busy couple of months, I thought I'd post what's happening.
First, some people went to Yorkwood school today to do a program. I feel really bad that I couldn't take the time off work, I hope with my new contract I'll have an easier time with things like this. Hope it went well.
Friday the 12th we have practice at Ellens, and we are going to try to get there early to put the heads on the prison drum. Be there at 6:00 if you want to help.
Tuesday the 16th we are going to Knox county nursing home, be there at 6:30.
We are going into the womens prison on the 20th, and the mens on june 17th.
Memorial day weekend we will be at the creve cour rendevous from 12:00 to 4:00 saturday and sunday (not monday).
Then there are several powwows coming up, the mothers day powwow at seven circles May 13th and 14th, then the Pimitoui powwow June 10-11, and the New Windsor powwow june 24-25. WHEW! I think I got it all for now.
Plus, we will have our regular tuesday and friday meetings.
Speaking of the prison, Jim says there is a snag in our efforts to be a seperate entity from the fellowship. It is kind of up in the air right now, I don't know what will happen. At least we will have the drum ready for them (if we can ever get in).
Brenda had to have a number of teeth removed wednesday, I hope she is okay. Everybody wish her well.
Unless I,m mistaken, Scott and Rosa should be back now. We all hope to see them and the baby soon.
I think I got it all. I hope to have something on community service soon.
